The white spirit bears (kermode bears) are indigenous to the northern coast of British Columbia in an area across Hecate Strait from the Queen Charlotte Islands. They are concentrated in the area from Terrace to Kitimat and on Princess Royal Island. Princess Royal Island has the greatest number of them. These spirit bears are genetic alternates to the British Columbia black bear. They are not albinos. They are a sub species of the common black bear and they have their own habitat areas. Much of their behavior is similar to that of the north american black bear including their diet. They have been called spirit bears (originally by indigenous people) because of their mysterious appearance and the remoteness of their range.
