The white spirit bears (kermode bears) are indigenous to the northern coast of British Columbia in an area across Hecate Strait from the Queen Charlotte Islands. They are concentrated in the area from Terrace to Kitimat and on Princess Royal Island. Princess Royal Island has the greatest number of them.
These spirit bears are genetic alternates to the British Columbia black bear. They are not albinos. They are a sub species of the common black bear and they have their own habitat areas. Much of their behavior is similar to that of the north american black bear including their diet.
They have been called spirit bears (originally by indigenous people) because of their mysterious appearance and the remoteness of their range.
TOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1
On the first day you fly to Terrace, British Columbia from whatever your point of origin happens to be. Upon arrival we will provide an orientation to the area and some preliminary information about the Spirit Bears. We will then proceed to Kitimat, BC where we will board our 73 foot boat for the trip to Princess Royal Island. The first night is spent at our cabin on Princess Royal Island.
DAY 2
On the second day we will navigate to selected spots on Princess Royal Island on our quest to experience the "Spirit Bears". We will hike along selected streams and along the beaches where the Spirit Bears are known to congregate. By dinner time we will end up at the King Pacific Lodge in Barnard Harbour. Here we will have a lecture on the life and habitat of the Spirit Bears as well as on their history. We will retire for the night.
DAY 3
On this third day we will continue our quest for the Spirit Bears at different regions of Princess Royal Island from the ones already traversed. We will again navigate the shores and hike along a stream as well as along the beaches. Dinner time will bring us back to our cabin where we will have another lecture on the "Spirit Bears", this time focusing on their significance to the local Tsimpsean aboriginal people. Great legends will be addressed as well as the legend of the "Raven" who, as supernatural creature, was instrumental in the creation of the Spirit Bears. Information regarding the local black wolves will also be provided.
DAY 4
On this last day we will make our way back to Kitimat and then to Terrace for the flight back to your individual points of origin.
